Doxazosin

Doxazosin is a prescription alpha-1 blocker used to relieve urinary symptoms associated with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Immediate-release doxazosin is also indicated for hypertension in some markets and product labels. The intended use matters because the available formulations and recommended regimens differ.

Doxazosin is commonly supplied as oral tablets containing doxazosin mesylate. Immediate-release tablets are available in 1 mg, 2 mg, 4 mg, and 8 mg strengths. An extended-release formulation is also available in certain markets for BPH. Extended-release and immediate-release products should not be treated as interchangeable without clinical guidance.

How It Works

Doxazosin selectively blocks alpha-1 adrenergic receptors in vascular smooth muscle and, in BPH, in the smooth muscle of the prostate and bladder neck. This relaxes blood vessels and can reduce vascular resistance. Relaxation of smooth muscle around the urinary outlet can improve urine flow and relieve certain lower urinary tract symptoms.
